EU Public Affairs Associate (5yr+ experience)

Blue Star Strategies SAS is looking for a dynamic consultant with at least 5 years of professional experience in EU public affairs and/or EU institutions.

The associate will be responsible for assisting the firm's clients in the definition and implementation of state of the art public affairs strategies that serve clients’ business goals and for expanding the Brussels office, in liaison with Blue Star Strategies’ partners.

We advise our clients on their strategic positioning vis-à-vis these decision-makers and influencers in France and Europe to promote their interests in the public debate, in particular by relying on citizen mobilization and the opportunities for influence offered by social media across the digital landscape.

Blue Star Strategies SAS also supports US companies already developing activities in the EU or considering market entry through the global network of its US partner, our European clients operating in the United States, as well as clients in Latin America.

What will your missions be?

Under the supervision of Blue Star Strategies’ partners, the associate will perform the following missions:

Define and implement EU institutional strategies

o   Understanding of clients’ businesses and their needs;

o   Proactive institutional monitoring to identify risks / opportunities for the clients;

o   Development of creative public affairs strategies to achieve clients’ objectives;

o   Implementation of public affairs strategies;

o   Ability to work hand-in-hand with external experts (lawyer, communication consultant, etc.).

Manage client relationships

o   Anticipation of client needs;

o   Autonomy in the daily management of certain dossiers;

o   Close monitoring of client satisfaction, with the support of the partners.

Engage in business development

o   Contribute to the expansion of the Brussels office;

o   Identification of opportunities to extend the missions of existing clients and clients in new sectors;

o   Support business development (research work, drafting of assistance proposals).

What skills are we looking for?

Know how

o   Excellent ability to analyze the political environment and complex decision-making processes at European level;

o   Excellent analytical, argumentative, critical thinking and writing/oral communication skills;

o   Experience working in public affairs, either in-house or for a consultancy, with a good understanding of how each of the EU institution function, including the committees.

Social skills

o   A highly motivated, autonomous person with a strong capacity for initiative and adaptation, especially in crisis situations;

o   Good interpersonal skills, sense of humor and team spirit.

 Requirements

o   Master’s degree or equivalent primarily in European affairs, international affairs, political science or law, and secondarily, in economics/business, and at least two years of experience working in a public affairs role (consultancy, in house), per description above;

o   Hold a valid work permit or eligible to legally work within the EU; 

o   Experience analyzing business development opportunities, developing government affairs, communicating with and advising clients on market expansion strategies;

o   Fluency in English, and proficiency in two other European languages.

Limited travel may be required, particularly within the EU;

EU Public Affairs Junior Associate

Blue Star Strategies SAS is looking for a junior associate who has completed her/his studies and held at least two (2) previous internships (with a minimum of three (3) months per internship) in EU public affairs and/or EU institutions.

The junior associate will be responsible for assisting the firm's partners to support clients in the implementation of state of the art public affairs strategies that serve clients’ business goals.  The junior associate will take direction from Blue Star Strategies’ team and partners.

-     Monitoring and reporting of works of European Institutions (Parliament, Commission, Council, agencies, etc.) so as civil society initiatives;

-     Drafting thematic briefing notes;

Implement EU institutional strategies

-     Mapping of political decision makers;

-     Drafting of institutional road map;

-     Drafting of biographies and briefing notes;

-     Drafting of messaging and position papers;

-     Participation to institutional meetings.

Client relationships

-     Participation to clients meeting;

-     Ability to have a day to day relationship with the client.

Engage in business development

-     Conduct researches.

Internship Program

We offer a dynamic, hands-on internship program for Master's and graduate student candidates and recent college graduates on a rotating, year-round basis.

With access to the firm’s senior partners, this opportunity allows for substantive work on major projects.

Our clients are U.S. companies seeking services abroad, with a focus on Europe and Latin America in more than 30 countries, as well as international businesses and organizations. The industry sectors in which we work include, but are not limited to, financial services, hospitality, energy, multilateral organizations, pharmaceuticals, and telecommunications.

The internship is paid via a monthly stipend.

Responsibilities/Opportunities include:

  • Substantive research and written assignments for principals, clients, and partners,
  • Attendance at and reportage of internal and external meetings, hearings, and events on behalf of the firm and its clients, including the U.S. Congress, Executive branch, think tanks, international financial institutions, and foreign embassies, and
  • Preparation of briefings and presentations.

Internship:

  • Winter: January-April; Spring/Summer: May-July; Fall: September-December

Preferred Intern Candidate Qualifications:

  • Recent graduate student or Master’s degree candidate in foreign affairs, international business, or similar field
  • Knowledge of the U.S. political system and current world affairs
  • Superb writing, research, and analytical skills
  • Prior intern experience, including Congress, Departments of State and Commerce, nonprofit and multilateral organizations, private sector
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Some administrative experience
  • Fluency in English and professional proficiency in another language, Spanish or Polish is desired
